Hello. It’s April and summer is coming soon! I hope you enjoy the good weather of spring before its come to an end:) Today, we will tell you about the things SSI has been up to in March.

Firstly, we taught students how to read notes and locate them on the instrument. We also taught them how to play C, D, and chromatic scales. Now, most of the students can play C, and many students are starting to get D. However, we had some troubles with teaching chromatic scale because it was hard to explain and make students understand the concept of sharps and flats. So, we are planning to improve our teaching method. For example, we want to just show them what sharps and flats look like in C and D scales and make them memorize it first. Then they will start to understand it more later in the future, when they have enough musical background knowledge.

Also, we had training sessions for student teachers. We taught our members how to teach younger kids the hard musical concepts in ways that the kids can understand better and have more fun. We taught them about how they should be focused on being encouraging and more enthusiastic while teaching beginners . We also reminded them to make the learning more active and explain the concepts by breaking them down.

We also made some adjustments to improve our teaching and learning environment. We now tune outside of the room so that the students can learn the music theory in a quieter space. Additionally, we reorganized music and teaching tools, such as the tapes for the fingerboard, in the cabinet. Lastly, we started creating a syllabus that we can share when we collaborate with other schools in the future — a long term goal that we have.

Last but not least, we are in need of lots of funds, as many of our instruments need repairs and we also need new instruments. So please contact us through the contact page if you are willing to donate unused instruments, or please visit the fundraiser page if you are willing to donate money. Thank you!
